David Rey This famous work for solo trombone by written by the uruguayan composer and trombonist, Enrique Crespo is a captivating piece that highlights the full expressiveness and virtuosity of the instrument. The work explores a wide range of the trombone’s capabilities, blending lyrical passages with moments of technical brilliance. As its name suggests, this improvisation follows a free and evocative character, giving the impression of a spontaneous discourse while being carefully constructed. Crespo employs a rich palette of dynamics and effects to showcase the unique voice of the trombone, featuring nuanced glissandos, varied articulations, and shifting rhythms. Ideal for recitals or competitions, Improvisation No. 1 poses a musical and technical challenge for any trombonist while remaining accessible and engaging for the audience. It perfectly reflects Crespo’s personal style, blending classical and jazz influences, and celebrates the expressive freedom inherent to improvisation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMevZYB06Hw 0 0 |
David Rey This Sonata is a masterpiece of lyrical beauty and technical brilliance. Originally composed in 1824 for the now-obsolete arpeggione—a hybrid between a guitar and a cello—it has become a staple of the repertoire for various instruments, such as the cello and the viola. It has since been embraced by many other instruments, and now by the trombone too.
The first movement is characterized by its flowing melodies and seamless interplay between the soloist and the piano. Schubert’s gift for song-like phrasing is evident throughout, with passages that balance grace and introspection alongside moments of lively virtuosity. The movement features elegant themes, subtle harmonic shifts, and expressive modulations that reflect the Romantic spirit of Schubert’s era. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agn2r_mqUYw 0 0 |
David Rey This arrangement of this yet well-known challenging fun piece is from the hand of the composer himself, a native of Valais (in Switzerland) as I am.
I chose to perform the exact same part (meant for Bass-trombone) on tenor as those pedal tones are part of the fun 😎
It was recorded with my friends of the "Geneva Brass" at the end of one of our concerts in Switzerland in march 2022. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVSeQh09jvk 0 0 |
